The Tao of Teaching
This presentation introduces a rationale for incorporating Taoist principles into classroom practice. These principles go beyond the mechanics of lesson preparation and program delivery and address the role of human behavior in the teaching/learning process. The Taoist principles of simplicity, patience and compassion are applied to interactions with children and building a sense of self-esteem and self-worth in the process. In addition to these three principles, the precepts of oneness, dynamic balance, cyclical growth, and harmonious action are considered in the context of teacher behaviors and student success. After twenty-seven plus years in classrooms teaching at all levels, and several years of reflection on my teaching practice following retirement, I found my greatest success working with students arose from applying these principles and precepts. My aim is to share these insights with others.
